Increasingly an important part of the dental health team, the dental hygienist works to prevent gum disease and tooth loss by educating patients and helping them to maintain oral hygiene. The hygienist performs examinations of the mouth and builds a treatment program with the patient, explains how to keep teeth clean and when needed removes plaque. In some states the hygienist can administer local anaesthetics and perform x-rays independently. In addition they may polish teeth, administer fluorine baths and even give nutritional information.The hygienist keeps independent medical records of the patient, and works without supervision from a dentist, although they usually work in a dentists practice.
